We do our best to make dental visits fun, educational, and stress-free for little ones. With our gentle care, children never have to grow up afraid of the dentist!
Routine Teeth Cleanings & Dental Exams
When a child is getting their routine check-up, parents are more than welcome to sit with them through the appointment. During these visits, we gently clean the teeth and check for any issues with tooth development, bite alignment, and the gums.
Fluoride treatments are an easy way to combat tooth decay. Many types of toothpastes include fluoride and a majority of cities have fluoride in the water, but if your child requires more to prevent cavities, we can offer fluoride treatments.
Dental Sealants & Fillings
The hard-to-reach grooves, or pits and fissures, on the back teeth are prime spots for decay to develop. We can provide dental sealants or tooth fillings to keep harmful bacteria out and strengthen teeth.
We make sure our kids wear all the appropriate gear and safety equipment when playing contact sports, so we should protect their teeth, too! Mouthguards shield the teeth, lips, cheeks, and gums from sports-related injuries.Schedule an Appointment
Common Questions about Children’s Dental Care
How often should I take my child to see the dentist?
It is generally advised that your child comes in every six months for a regular check-up. During these visits, we check for cavities and any other issues that might be developing. Your dentist can let you know if more visits are necessary depending on their oral health.
What if my kid is afraid of the dentist?
We completely understand that going to an office with unusual equipment and strangers who want to work on your teeth can seem frightening for little ones. We’ve found that the best way to help them avoid growing up with dental fear is to bring them when they’re young (they should see a dentist by their first birthday). This helps them grow accustomed to visiting the dentist and decreases the chances of them needing more serious, “scarier” procedures.
You can also schedule a meet-and-greet between your child and their dentist before their appointment to help them get more comfortable. The dentists at The Smile Spot are more than happy to say hello to your kids before their actual appointment.
Why is it important to take care of baby teeth?
Baby teeth fall out eventually so we don’t have to worry about them, right? Wrong! Primary teeth serve many purposes, including helping your child eat solid foods and ensuring proper speech development. They also function as placeholders for when permanent teeth come in. This means that taking care of baby teeth helps with proper spacing and alignment in the future. Additionally, healthy teeth are another part of overall health and nutrition. Even baby teeth can get infected and cause pain! These are all reasons why we advise you to bring your children to the dentist when their first tooth comes in.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Dental X-rays are extremely safe, and we use all the necessary precautions to significantly minimize the amount of radiation exposure. It’s important to get X-rays so we can detect any issues hidden from the naked eye and make sure teeth are erupting properly. The Smile Spot also uses digital X-rays, which emit up to 90% less radiation than their traditional counterparts.
Is sedation safe for children?
If a child is particularly anxious or uneasy in the dental chair, we may recommend gentle sedation or anesthesia. We thoroughly explain the options and discuss your child’s individual needs, so you’ll feel comfortable about the procedure. The dentists at The Smile Spot are focused on your child’s safety, and we follow all industry guidelines about the safe administration of sedation.
